Winter is coming, and before the snow, ice, and freezing temperatures arrive, it's a good time to take a few minutes to check and clean your security cameras.

A dirty camera lens can affect image quality, especially at night. Dust, dirt, insects, water spots, and other buildup can make an otherwise clear camera image look blurry or hazy.

How to Clean Your Security Camera

Cleaning a security camera is usually simple, but it's important to be gentle.

1. Check the camera first

Before cleaning, inspect the camera for dirt, cobwebs, water spots, or other buildup. Check that the camera housing and lens cover are securely in place.

2. Remove loose dirt and cobwebs

Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth,  compressed air or gentle air blower to remove loose dust and cobwebs. Avoid pressing dirt across the lens, as this can cause scratches.

3. Clean the lens cover gently

Use a clean microfiber lens cloth to gently wipe the lens cover. If additional cleaning is needed, lightly dampen the cloth with clean water or a lens-safe cleaner.

Never spray cleaner directly onto the camera or lens.

4. Check the image afterward

Once the lens is clean, check your camera view during both daytime and nighttime. Look for glare, haze, blurry areas, or anything blocking the camera's field of view.

Don't Forget About Outdoor Cameras

Outdoor cameras deal with much more than dirt. Leaves, insects, rain, snow, ice, and condensation can all affect what your camera sees.

Before winter arrives, make sure your cameras have a clear view and that nothing has shifted or become loose.

If your camera is mounted high up or in a difficult-to-reach location, don't put yourself at risk trying to clean it. A professional can inspect and clean the camera as part of a security system check.

A Clear Camera Is an Important Camera

Your security system can only show you what's happening if the camera has a clear view.

Taking a few minutes to clean and inspect your cameras before winter can help keep your security footage clear when you need it most.
